Space Hippo – Award-winning Shadow Puppetry
Show Length: 60 minutes
English and Japanese
Space Hippo is an adventure-comedy science-fiction show with a hint of social satire. It uses over 200 intricately cut shadow puppets projected onto a large screen to create the feeling of
watching a live animated movie. The puppeteers sit in front of the audience, underneath the screen so that the audience can see the puppeteers bring the puppets to life.
The story follows an ordinary Hippopotamus who is sent into space by politicians in a misguided attempt to save the world from an impending ecological disaster. We discover that Space
Hippo is a mother who is desperate to return to her baby on Earth. She journeys across the universe, trying to get home with the help of a food dispensing robot and a mysterious alien lizard
man. Along the way she encounters resistance from two opposing alien forces who believe that she is the Egyptian Goddess Tawaret and want to use her for their own selfish purposes.
The show was created by puppeteers Daniel Wishes and Seri Yanai who have been collaborating together since 2012, when they met at the London School of Puppetry. Space Hippo includes 26 original pieces of music written for the show by musician Elliott Loran.
The show won numerous awards this past summer while touring Canadian Fringe festivals.
