Pictured here is the original team that created RYOKOU | 旅行. Ensemble members (adults, left to right) Angelo Austin, Eik Leknesund Elnes, Amanda Pilmer Roberts, and Andrew Woolner created the show, and were joined by three local Kawasaki dance students Rida, Kanta, and Miyu in the latter stages of rehearsal.
RYOKOU | 旅行
About the show
From one country to another they go. From a safe home to a safe haven they come. Crossing imaginary lines, climbing real walls, they move. On planes, on boats, by trail, and on foot: they journey. An ensemble of immigrants and outsiders have laid the groundwork for a show about traveling.
Using bodies in motion, projection mapping, live music, and humour, the Yokohama Theatre Group weaves together its newest original show, RYOKOU. A theatrical exploration of how and why people move from place to place, and the issues surrounding migration of any type, RYOKOU is a visual experience that anyone of any age can enjoy, no matter what languages they can speak.
TOURING / DEVELOPMENT
The first production of RYOKOU was developed on a shoestring budget over five months and performed in Kawasaki, Japan. We are currently seeking partners with whom we can continue to develop the show for touring. We are looking for creative collaborators as well as partners interested in producing and further developing the show with us in inside or outside of Japan.
RYOKOU is a simple, accessible, and powerful exploration of an important issue that nonetheless eschews moralizing or preaching to its audience. We think it has the potential to be a great all-ages show that your audiences will love, too.
